Wellen aus Licht / Dear Darkness

This documentary short is about 12-year-old Frida who is nearly blind, she can only make out contours and shadows. She likes to come up with stories in her head, which is where the animated parts take place. In these moments where the audience is alone with Frida, the animation attempts to grasp her world and her playful, humorous and surprisingly grown up self. DEAR DARKNESS celebrated its world premiere at DOK Leipzig in 2019.

In 2024, it received an official recommendation by the German Board of Film Recommendations (FBW). Jury statement: “We like the animated images of Frida’s story. A window opens, and we find ourselves in the forest with the real Frida. In the short film, we consciously see how Frida uses her other senses. She can smell the summer in the leaves. We observe that the leaves feel different to Frida and she can describe it precisely. The filmmaker takes time for this. The film is encouraging, because effort pays off, and we glimpse into an unknown world.”
